Ulpan Or - The Fastest Way to Learn Hebrew"Ulpan Or" is a series of courses (each contains booklet(s) and audio CDs). These courses are created by Orly Ganor, an Israeli with years of experience in teaching Ulpan. She has gained expertise in knowing the most common phrases and problems that introductory students struggle with, and her courses address those problems!Ulpan is the Hebrew name for classes that teach the Hebrew language. It is divided into six levels, named after the alphabet, so Kita-Alpeh is Level 1 Kita Bet is Level 2, Kita Gimel is Level 3. At this time, we only have product for the first three levels. You can buy each Level as a package deal. Each Level includes three products (or "kits") that can be purchased separately. I'll explain more about the levels in the near future.In Israel, you might spend 5 months on Levels 1-3, attending class several hours per day. So outside of Israel, books and audio-CDs are the next best way to learn! Listen to the CD's in your home or car - over and over and over! The songs are particular effective, because they help you learn subconciously. Try to squeeze in a few hours per week with the books and written material. An Overview of Ulpan Courses in GeneralA Hebrew Ulpan is by definition an intensive course in Hebrew, typically an on-site course in Israel. Each school varies considerably. Most Ulpans are free for up to a half a year for new immigrants, while for tourists, the cost for a full time (5-days a week, 4 hours per day) program is standard at about $200 a month.Ulpans are all organized by level using the Hebrew alphabet (or Aleph-Bet). While contents may vary slightly, the following will give you an idea of what at least topics the first three courses cover. ALEPH (Level 1) - May or may not include reading skills, but this is definitely the place to start. Many American Jews fit in here). At the end, the students will definitely know the Aleph-Bet, how to write the cursive letters, and a very basic vocabulary. This includes typical phrases such as 'Excuse me, where is the post office?', even though there's little you would understand the answer before level Gimel, unless they point. Singing in class is popular. Course length 8 to 10 weeks or combined with Bet and Gimel in a five month program. BET (Level 2) - Starting with a vocabulary of a several hundred words, but very poor communications skills; no Israeli will talk Hebrew to you at this point unless you're related or have something they want. The main focus of this level is vocabulary building, but particulary the verb system (including present and past tense verbs with some exposure to the future and imperative (commands)). The teacher still speaks very slowly with a carefully selected vocabulary at this point, even though it may seem otherwise. Students at this point may be introduced to the 'Easy Hebrew' newspaper, and special radio programs for immigrants. Course length 8 to 10 weeks or combined with Aleph and Gimel in a five month program. GIMEL (Level 3) - Starting with a reasonable vocabulary of every-day Hebrew, and the habit of trying to conjugate verbs when speaking them. The teacher begins to speak faster at this point, and you may begin reading a little from the regular newspapers. Verbs are covered in the future tense, and the different structures of the verbs (passive, reflexive, causal, etc..) are introduced. The pace of learning picks up, and you learn many of the dreaded exceptions to the regular rules. On the plus side, you can get by on the street pretty good as long as the person you are talking to wants to communicate. Course length 8 weeks or combined with Aleph and Bet in a five month program. |
